Dinacharya: a simple Ayurvedic daily routine

Ayurveda places as much weight on what you do every day as on any treatment. Dinacharya — the daily routine — is a set of habits meant to keep digestion, sleep and energy steady.
1. Wake before sunrise
Classical texts recommend rising during brahma muhurta, roughly 90 minutes before sunrise. If that is not practical, aim for the same waking time every day.
2. Clean the mouth and senses
Scrape the tongue, brush, and rinse the mouth. Gandusha (oil pulling) with sesame oil is a traditional addition.
3. Abhyanga — oil massage
A few minutes of warm-oil self-massage before bathing. The oil is chosen by constitution and season; ask at your consultation which suits you.
4. Regular meals
Eat the largest meal at midday, when digestion is strongest, and keep dinner light and early.
5. An early night
Aim to be asleep by 10 pm. Screens off an hour before bed helps.
