Many people hear about Panchakarma but are unsure what it involves day to day. This guide walks through a typical programme.

Before you begin

Every programme starts with a consultation. The doctor assesses your constitution (prakriti), current imbalance (vikriti) and health history, and decides whether Panchakarma is suitable now.

Preparation: snehana and swedana

For several days you take medicated ghee internally and receive oil massage and herbal steam. This prepares the body for the main procedure.

The main procedure

Depending on your condition, this may be virechana (purgation), basti (medicated enema) or another procedure. It is always supervised.

Afterwards: samsarjana krama

A gradual return to normal food over several days. This step matters as much as the procedure itself.

How to prepare

  • Keep your schedule light during the programme.
  • Tell the doctor about any medicines you take.
  • Bring loose, comfortable clothes.
